Gutter Guard Summer Protection

leafbustersThe arrival of summer signals that it is time to CLEAN UP AROUND YOUR HOME as your own personal Plan To Survive!

This is when a wealth of rain falls supporting the growth of vegetation which eventually becomes fuel for fire. Gutter guards are a great way to help prevent damage to your home.

Check in your area for the schedule for controlled burn offs so that you will be ready. Bushfires or Fire Storms as they are also known seem as if they are living breathing creatures which suck in oxygen and consume everything in their path.

There is no way to outrun a fire like this because it will suck the oxygen right out of your lungs and you will die from the radiant heat that reaches you even when it is not close. Cool fires are those that reach 1,500 degrees C, and hot fires are those that reach at least 3,000 degrees C.

PLAN TO SURVIVE -- FIRE EXPOS

These were started in February, 1997 by CFA Headquarters at Montrose Hall. We at Leafbusters were invited to put our system on display there.

I can remember this very specifically, because this was at the time we call twenty twenty-one. This was a fire that lasted for 2 days and destroyed most of Sassafras, Ferny Creek, Upwey, Kalorama and the greater part of Region 14.

Paul was my partner then and was part of the "Strike Team" to Mornington and left just a few hours earlier. I received the call from Olinda Comm's (I had no idea that our mountain was ablaze because I was inside at the time) telling me "don't worry -- but!" This is never a good way to start a conversation and therefore, I nearly fell over.

Just as the other units did, Olinda stayed back. They could not inform me as to exactly where they were, but it was somewhere in Ferny Creek. Although I listened intently to my DFA scanner, I was unable to pick up Comm's from Olinda Pumpers or Tankers.

Most upsetting was when the telephone communications did not come. The entire world was paying attention, but those of us on the mountain were unable to communicate.

I drive myself to the Olinda CFA station to ask if I could do anything. I was told to go to Cuckoo and from there I could get rolls and bread along with cold meats to distribute to the men fighting the fire. All the businesses voluntarily gave food and drink and other items to help. We knew our boys were out there, but where.

The entire area began to look and feel as if it was a war zone. There was no traffic allowed to go up and down the mountain. Fire units were everywhere. We were sent strike teams by the CFA! Even civilians along with cement trucks enlisted to bring water up the mountain. Elvis and other smaller choppers were flying around.

Apart from the sound of the fire, everything was still. It smelled terrible and smoky grey filled the sky. There were no sounds from birds or animals because they had all left. We were left with the stillness surrounding us and that awful FEAR. It was mostly fear for the men we knew.

Three people were found dead at Ferny Creek right where they died---under their home.

Day 2 -- that day as Olinda fought the fire at Ferny Creek, the wind direction changed. It is only possible for our men to fight the fires from behind and at that moment the Captain yelled for them to BUG OUT QUICK. Unable to roll the hose back into the truck, they cut them instead.

The fire was now on its way to Olinda---to their homes where their wives, girlfriends and kids were waiting!!!!

A STROKE OF LUCK

Fortunately the weather then changed again. At first it was spitting rain, and then it started drizzling. Finally, our boys had a fighting chance!!!! February 20th and 21st 1997, the rain saved us all!

Even at that, the insides of big, thick logs continued to burn. These had to be hosed until the fires went out, and it took days and days to get it all mopped up.

The Expo had been planned months in advance, but took place just a few days after the fire. It turned out to be a very sad event. PLAN TO SURVIVE -- you will learn how to reduce the risk of fire by reducing the fuel build up around your house. Everything you do will have a huge impact on preventing fires and saving your home from being burned.

A major area to consider is the gutters. Gutters should be kept clear of leaf debris. By installing Leafbusters gutter guards, you will have clear gutters. This is important for those days when fire erupts in your area because that is no time to start cleaning your gutters. You must be vigilant and always cautious about embers that can land on your home.

Embers are notorious for flying up ahead of or several kilometres behind fires.

When your gutters are filled with debris, this becomes kindling and fuel for fire. Embers landing there can ignite a fire. As the fire burns it travels from the gutters going under the tiles or metal on your roof. It can smolder for hours without you being aware of it. Once the smoke becomes visible, it is often too late to do anything about it.

Fires are just part of the nature of Australia and we cannot stop them. Without them, the natural flora will not regenerate. This is something we have learned to live with.

Nevertheless, there are some things you can do to prevent becoming a victim. Get a CFA scanner and use it, clean up and call Leafbusters to install a fire retardant system to your gutters and roof.

In Region 13, most CFA buildings are protected by Leafbusters.  Call us at 1300 GUTTER.

Come to the Emerald Fire Expo on 24th November at Emerald Hall from 10 to 3. There you will have the opportunity to say gidday to the volunteers who are true HEROES. Take a look at Pumpers, Tankers, Elvis's, small choppers, Mica, Police Fire Units, and a ton of others. Yes, the kids will be able to climb around on the fire trucks.

We'll see you there.

Gutter Protection companies are NOT created equal

I guess the main difference with Gutter Guard or gutter protection companies is simply the product and or services they offer.

I know of no other company in Australia that has its own product that it manufactures just for gutter protection. With Leafbusters, we designed the mesh and attachments simple and only for gutter protection. Of course it was because we needed such a product for ourselves.

There are many products now available, and unfortunately for many clients, we see the products that they have purchased and have not done the job. Yes, many are much cheaper than the Leafbusters’ systems. But, when we are instructed to removed these products to install our gutter guards, then, they are expensive.

Still, you get what you pay for.

Guarantees are of most importance when choosing a gutter protection system. At Leafbusters we put our money where our mouth is. We give a SATISFACTION guarantee. Therefore if you are not satisfied with the performance of our system in 12 months (that is every season of the year) we WILL remove it and give you your money back.

When choosing a gutter guard, please ensure you are given the warranty or guarantee to read, and understand what it is that you are guaranteed for. Are they in simple English? Are you totally protected or does that company give itself an “out” with that warranty. Information is power. For any questions, we are here to help. Please feel free to call our office anytime for any gutter protection question and or advise you may require.

Until next time, take good care of yourselves,

3 Things to Consider When Choosing Gutter Protection

Do you want maintenance free gutter protection?

There are leaf guards, gutter guards and all sorts of gutter protection, however they are not all the same. Many are leaf meshes that are installed IN the gutter.

You cannot fix the problem of the gutter with the gutter.  In other words – it is advisable, and necessary to get the leaves to by-pass the guttering all together.  Most in gutter guards are a trap that collect the leaves and debris within them.  Therefore you must take out the gutter guard, clean it, clean gutters and then replace the product.  OR you can choose a fitted gutter protection system that creates a ski-slope that allows the leaves and debris to slide over it, past the gutter and onto the ground.

Metal gutter protection or a Plastic Product?

Metal or rather steel rusts, and often will rust its surrounding environment: your roof and or your gutters.  Aluminium corrodes. Electrolysis happens when 2 dissimilar metal are touching each other.

Plastic: a good plastic product with high UV content will not rust nor corrode nor affect your roof and or guttering and will last a long time. It is also better for rain water collection. For fire danger areas, you can get a plastic gutter mesh that is also fire resistant.  Click this link to see more about our fire retarted mesh.

Quality versus Price?

We all know we get what we pay for. Leaf guards are NOT all made equal. Yes, you must balance the budget of course, however a most pressing question is: Value for Money.  Some-times cheap is cheap. The balance is to choose wisely and purchase gutter protection that will do the job you require, with a long working life and becomes a valuable addition to the home.

Welcome to the new Website Revamp

Fortnightly I will be blogging from: “Thea’s Desk” – I have never blogged before, so here we are just doing it Thea’s way.  It may be a little serious, it may be a little light, but it’s certainly going to be fun!!!  Enjoy

For my first one, I really want to thank enormously our clients who purchased from us.  Most importantly the very first “guinea pigs” back in 1992 who had faith in us and this unchartered territory.

Our product and service was quite unique and very much unknown.  Wow, your giant leap of faith in Leafbusters got us started on this wonderful adventure, and of course the rest is “history”

Part of our Mission Statement goes like this: “To go where NO other Gutter Protection has dared to go”  And we did.  We started this gutter protection industry as it is known today.  We had no mentors, and no one to “copy”

As you know we designed this system for me because I was sick and tired of cleaning gutters, and not being able to collect clean rain water.  And there was no gutter guard on the market that worked!!

In entering the market place, our sales and marketing techniques, our fittings methodologies, our approach to you – the client was developed from listening to what YOU wanted.  So – thanks our dear customers you were my teachers and I learnt a lot from you.

Till next time,
